An ergonomic kneeling chair is the bridge between modern ergonomics and ancient body awareness. For centuries, Buddhist monks have practiced and mastered the art of meditation. In many traditions, devout monks will sit in meditation for at least 8 hours a day. The first rule of a successful meditation is to prepare the body for a comfortable, prolonged sitting session. The mind can not be calm unless the body is first.
The ergonomic kneeling chair was invented by the Norwegian, Hans Christian Mengshoel, in the 1970’s. A typical ergonomic kneeling chair is designed to create an open, obtuse angle between the torso and the legs, allowing for the spine to achieve a more comfortable sitting position. To accomplish this, the knees are dropped down roughly 20 to 30 degrees as the shins rest on a padded surface for support.
